New community piano to launch at Waterloo Station
Adding a new musical dimension to your commute, Waterloo Station is getting its very own community piano!
The cult American fried chicken brand Popeyes is launching its latest fast food branch at Waterloo Station on Friday 21 June.
One of the most popular southern fried chicken chains in the US, Popeyes counts scores of American celebrities as fans – including Jimmy Kimmel, Serena Williams, Megan Thee Stallion, Cardi B and even Beyoncé.
In 2021 Popeyes finally landed in the UK and has been steadily opening new stores. The launch of a new Popeyes has become quite the event, with lengthy queues forming in the early hours as fans scramble to be first in line to get their hands on the infamous Popeyes chicken sandwich.
This latest Popeyes launch at Waterloo Station on Friday 21 June looks set to attract the same interest, especially as this newest branch is one of the first Popeyes to open in central London.
What’s on the menu?
Founded in New Orleans Louisiana, Popeyes is known for its Cajun spiced, breaded and battered chicken that comes with a signature ‘shatter crunch’ coating that is hard to resist.
Popeyes’ crispy hot wings, tenders and chicken pieces are a signature, best enjoyed with a classic southern side like mac and cheese, Cajun rice or creamy mash with Cajun gravy.
In 2019 Popeyes ‘broke the internet’ in the US when they launched a chicken sandwich.
The simple formula of Popeyes crispy chicken served with pickles and sauce in a fluffy brioche bun set off a wild frenzy that saw people driving for miles clearing out store after store. Even major broadcasters sent out their correspondents to hunt down the fabled sandwich, with CBS presenter Gayle King reportedly visiting 15 different branches before she finally got to try the elusive sandwich.
The insane, instant popularity of the chicken sandwich eventually prompted Popeyes to make it a permanent item on the menu and you can now choose from ‘classic’, spicy and vegan versions.
Open from 6am, Popeyes Waterloo Station also has a breakfast menu that includes breakfast rolls, Cajun hash browns, muffins and American ‘biscuits’.
When’s it open?
Popeyes at Waterloo Station officially opens on Friday 21 June at 11am with a live performance by New Orleans-inspired brass band The Brass Funkeys.
Queues are expected to start forming very early with the first 3 people in line earning themselves free chicken sandwiches for a year (!), while the first 25 people in the queue will each score a free chicken sandwich and some exclusive Popeyes merch. Plenty more Popeyes giveaways are also happening at the station throughout the day.
Popeyes Waterloo Station opens daily 6am–11pm.
