Coming up at National Theatre this autumn

The National Theatre has announced its autumn 2024 programming, with another exciting season of new plays and time-honoured classics across the theatre’s three stages.

Tickets for the autumn season go on general sale to the public on 23 May and there’s a great variety of inspired shows to look forward to.

Autumn 2024 highlights

Coriolanus

David Oyelowo plays Coriolanus in this thrilling new production of Shakespeare’s timeless political tragedy. Directed by National Theatre Associate Lyndsey Turner (Under Milk Wood, The Crucible). 
WHEN: Coriolanus takes over the Olivier Theatre stage from 11 September to 9 November.

The Other Place 

Emma D’Arcy (of House of the Dragon fame) makes their National Theatre debut in this reimagining of the classic story of Antigone. Directed by Alexander Zeldin, this play inspired by the Sophocles tragedy explores themes of guilt, grief and greed. 
WHEN: Playing on the Lyttleton Theatre stage from 27 September to 9 November.

A Tupperware of Ashes

See Meera Syal playing a formidable mother struggling with the devastating impacts of an aging mind in this heart-breaking new drama about life, immigration and the Indian spiritual cycle of death and rebirth. Written by Tanika Gupta and directed by Pooja Ghai (who created the acclaimed The Empress together).
WHEN: Catch this new play on the Dorfman Theatre stage from 25 September to 6 November.

What's in store for the winter season?

From mid-November 2024 until mid-2025 the 450-seat Dorfman Theatre stage will be closed for renovations and infrastructure upgrades, making the upcoming winter season slightly smaller in scale this year.

Productions that are already scheduled for the National Theatre winter season include a revival of Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest starring Sharon D Clarke, Ncuti Gatwa and Hugh Skinner (20 November to 25 January at the Lyttleton Theatre), and a festive season adaptation of Noel Streatfeild’s novel Ballet Shoes on the OIivier stage (from 23 November).

When do tickets go on sale?

Tickets can be booked online at nationaltheatre.org.uk. General public sales for the autumn season 2024 open on 23 May.
