Little Simz to curate this year's Meltdown festival at Southbank Centre
Southbank Centre celebrates the 30th edition of Meltdown with London’s Little Simz taking the reins as this year's festival curator.
The newest restaurant to open in South Bank is the London steakhouse chain Flat Iron, whose expansive new restaurant at Royal Festival Hall is due to open on Friday 4 April.
Facing out onto Southbank Centre Square at the back of the Royal Festival Hall (where the weekly Southbank Centre Food Market takes place), the new restaurant is taking over the space that was once the Spiritland bar. The expansive restaurant will seat over 220 covers, with indoor and outdoor spaces.
Designed by Macauley Sinclair, Flat Iron Southbank pays homage to the rich architectural history of the Grade I listed Royal Festival Hall, with subtly presented mid-century references throughout that meld together with Flat Iron’s signature design ethos.
Outside, on the Southbank Centre Square beneath the concert hall’s wide overhanging balcony, a large terrace is planned complete with heated umbrellas, planting and festoon lights. Meanwhile, inside a large, central bar divides the space into two - the brighter bar seating area at the front, and the main dining area at the back.
The restaurant is led by (and named after) the ‘Flat Iron’ steak, a cut sourced from the feather blade and renowned for its flavour, tenderness and juiciness. Flat Iron's slim menu also features a rotating board of blackboard specials, including Wagyu daily specials, Scottish bavette and triple cheese truffle burger, all made using beef from the Flat Iron herd in Thirsk, Yorkshire.
The Flat Iron mantra is “Remarkable steak, accessible to all”. For those who find too many choices overwhelming, Flat Iron is a breath of fresh air with just one main steak to choose from (the Flat Iron – although you can also opt for one of the daily specials). You can then choose whichever sauces and sides you would like – or opt for a meat-only meal if you wish. Sides include Flat Iron’s popular beef dripping chips, creamed spinach, truffled macaroni cheese and crispy bone marrow garlic mash.
If you’re still hungry for something sweet, dessert – a homemade vanilla soft serve – is on the house!
Flat Iron opens at Southbank Centre on Friday 4 April. Find out more and book a table here.
To celebrate the launch of the new restaurant, Flat Iron will be giving away 500 free wagyu steaks from 5pm on Thursday 3 April.
All you need to do to be in with a chance of scoring a free meal is head down to the new restaurant from 5pm on Thursday 3 April. The first 500 customers through the door will get a steak on the house! The steaks will be available on a first-come-first-served basis, and will be given out until the restaurant runs out.
