Contribute to an installation at Hayward Gallery’s next exhibition!

27 th October 2025

Opening in February 2026 at Hayward Gallery, Japanese artist Chiharu Shiota’s exhibition Threads of Life will star a new installation featuring letters from the public.

Chiharu Shiota is best-known for her large-scale installations which engulf ordinary objects – such as shoes, keys, beds, chairs and dresses – within huge web structures made from woollen thread.

Showing concurrently with a new exhibition by Yin Xiuzhen, Shiota’s new exhibition at the Hayward will take over the gallery’s top floor where her signature works, including new large-scale sculptures, will be woven from floor to ceiling across the space.

Ahead of the exhibition, Shiota is inviting the public to contribute to her installation Letters of Thanks which will be on show in the exhibition.

Participants are invited to write letters of thanks to anyone, expressing gratitude for whatever has touched their lives. These letters will become part of a larger collective of accumulated letters, suspended in the air and woven together with red threads.

How to contribute your letters:

You can submit your letter online now at [email protected] or in person at the Hayward Gallery, where a collection box will be in the foyer from Tuesday 4 November 2025.
