The annual London Craft Week is one of the UK's leading craft events, celebrating the very best of British and international creativity in craft arts.
Showcasing everything from calligraphy and collage to jewellery-making, cobbling, pottery and the delicate Korean art form of Keum–boo, this is an exciting week for anybody with a passion for the artist of craftmanship.
London Craft Week events to look out for in South Bank this year include:
The latest exhibition at County Hall's contemporary ceramic arts gallery examines the fundamental relationship between raw materials and ceramic creation, presenting a wealth of insight into the chemistry and methodology behind glaze making and material experimentation. Featured works explore various approaches to material use, investigating everything from the potential of local clay bodies and ash glazes, to the manipulation of unconventional materials and processes.
During Craft Week also look out for an exhibition launch party (14 May from 6pm), a Dinner with the Artists evening (16 May) and a masterclass exploring the properties of London construction clay (17 May). The exhibition is on show 12 May to 29 June, open 11am-6pm (closed Mon). Entrance is free.
Contemporary Applied Arts takes over Oxo Gallery for Craft in Evolution, a group exhibition showcasing the work of 25 talented makers, exploring the dynamic relationship between craftsmanship and contemporary innovation. The exhibition brings together a diverse range of disciplines, from luminous glass to hand thrown ceramics and contemporary jewellery. From 13–18 May, open 11am–6pm.
Many of Oxo Tower’s high-end boutiques and artisan showrooms will be hosting special events as part of London Craft Week.
Workshop: wagumi - Kokedama Moss Balls Making Workshop
The Japanese crafts boutique wagumi hosts a series of kokedama moss ball-making workshops. The workshops offer the chance to acquire the skills of kokedama creation, and to take one home after the session and learn how to look after them. Workshops last one hour and take place at 11:15am, 1:30pm, 3:15pm and 5pm on Mon 12 May. Costs £30 per person.
Josef Koppmann: Surface and Texture Exhibition
An exhibition featuring silverware and jewellery by Jessica Jue, Sheng Zhang, Leonid Dementiev, and Josef Koppmann, all united by their passion for texture, love of precious metals, and meticulous craftsmanship. There is also a jewellery making and silversmithing demonstration at 6pm on Sat 17 May (costs £12). From 13–18 May, open 11am–6pm.
Furious Goose exhibition with Paul O’Farrell
The beautiful silk scarf studio Furious Goose presents an exhibition of artist Paul O’Farrell’s handmade corsets. Trained in fashion and fine art, O’Farrell brings those two worlds together spectacularly in his Heavenly Bodies series of wearable art. These elaborate, hand-crafted pieces can be worn for special occasions or purely for adorning your walls. From 12–18 May.
