Lambeth Palace, the official home of the Archbishop of Canterbury since 1197, has one of the oldest and largest private gardens in London. During the summer the palace gardens open their gates to the public on the first Friday afternoon of every month.
The Lambeth Palace Garden Open Days are hosted as fundraising events for local charities, and in addition to the opportunity to explore these beautiful gardens in full bloom, there’s also food and refreshments on sale with all proceeds going towards supporting brilliant local charities.
Highlights of the Palace’s serene gardens include a formal courtyard with a historic white Marseilles fig tree that was planted in 1556, a parkland-style garden area with woodland and nature planting, the formal rose terrace gardens, the scented chapel garden and a small wetland area that looks onto the contemporary Lambeth Palace Library building.
Dogs are welcome and there are refreshments on sale. Note that security searches are in operation at the entrance.
The charities supported at this year's open days are:
Fri 3 May Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity
Fri 7 June Friends of Lambeth Palace Library
Fri 5 July FareShare
Fri 2 Aug Harry's Hat
Fri 6 Sep Lia's Wings - Air Ambulance
FRI 2 AUG: Harry's Hat fundraiser open day
Falling right in the middle of the school holidays, the August edition of the open garden afternoon includes a variety of extra special events including a treasure hunt, family fun lawn games, food stalls, a Virtual brain walk experience with BrainLab's VR headsets nd the chance to play inside a giant inflatable brain, plus free guided tours of the Lambeth Palace Library.
