Lambeth Palace, the official home of the Archbishop of Canterbury since 1197, has one of the oldest and largest private gardens in London. This May, as part of the annual National Garden Scheme's open gardens series, the lush Lambeth Palace Gardens open their gates to the public for the evening.
Highlights of the Palace’s serene gardens include a formal courtyard with a historic white Marseilles fig tree that was planted in 1556, a parkland-style garden area with woodland and nature planting, the formal rose terrace gardens, the scented chapel garden and a small wetland area that looks onto the contemporary Lambeth Palace Library building.
As part of the event there will be a tea garden with wine and refreshments on sale, and there's the opportunity to meet the palace gardeners and learn more about the garden's unique history.
Note that security searches are in operation at the entrance.
