Celebrating the creative genius of the writer-producer-director team Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, this is the BFI’s most ambitious archive cinema programme since 2012's The Genius of Hitchcock.
Running through December, the blockbuster series includes new BFI restorations of the pairs' most celebrated films such as A Matter of Life and Death and The Thief of Bagdad.
There are also remasters of Powell’s early films and films that Pressburger wrote for others, plus a major exhibition hosted at the BFI Southbank devoted to the making of The Red Shoes and an extensive programme of talks.
Adding yet more depth to the programme many of the film screenings include talks, introductions and discussions by leading British filmmakers, curators, archivists, actors and academics.
On show from Fri 10 November until Sunday 7 January The Red Shoes: Beyond the Mirror, is a mesmerising and immersive exhibition hosted in the Blue Room at BFI Southbank based on the dazzling technicolour film The Red Shoes from 1948.
The exhibition includes previously unseen costume and set designs, behind-the-scenes photographs, and of course the iconic red shoes themselves, and has been designed to bring the story spellbindingly to life with interactive elements throughout.
Entrance to the exhibition is free, although prior booking is advised as space is limited and tickets are issued based on time slots.
