Marking the 75th anniversary of Powell and Pressburger’s ravishing ballet film The Red Shoes, this colourful exhibition at the BFI goes behind the scenes to reveal the story of its production.
On display are scores of original set designs and choreography sketches, photography, costumes and the iconic red shoes themselves. The exhibition space has been designed to resemble a 1940s film set, complete with a recreation of the dressing table of the iconic actress and ballerina Moira Shearer.
Among the more unusual items on display are a 1989 fax from the film director Michael Powell to Kate Bush (deeply inspired by the film she named her 7th album, The Red Shoes) and congratulatory cards that the young Moira Shearer received from her fellow ballet stars at the Sadler Wells company.
