Brady Corbet’s audacious and enrapturing American post-war epic The Brutalist has stunned critics and is widely tipped to clock up plenty of big awards this season.
The film stars a luminous Adrien Brody as a (fictional) Hungarian-Jewish architect and Holocaust survivor László Tóth who arrives in America in 1947 with nothing but his name. Navigating the poverty and degradation of a new life, his sole beacon of hope is the letters he exchanges with his wife (Felicity Jones), who remains stranded in Europe. But he soon crosses paths with a wealthy magnate (Guy Pearce) who can potentially change his fortunes and offer him a path to the American Dream.
Novelistic and richly detailed, Corbet’s portrait of Tóth is a compelling excavation into the immigrant experience, and a potent rumination on the dark connections between capitalism, power, trauma and art. Beautifully constructed, packed with magnetic performances and created with stunning VistaVision cinematography – this is a film that makes for a dazzling big screen experience.
In addition to the 70mm film screenings, the BFI is also showing The Brutalist in Digital 4k.
