Bringing together some of the biggest names in South Asian music with cutting-edge new voices and cross-genre collaborations from across the UK, the South Asian Sounds festival at Southbank Centre presents a rich variety of sounds and traditions from the classical to the contemporary.
Performers include the Afghan Youth Orchestra, appearing alongside outstanding ensembles and soloists from across the UK, the ‘King of Bhangra’ Malkit Singh, Pakistani singer Zeeshan Ali, Indian singer and Bollywood star Pratibha Singh Baghel and Indian classical vocalist and composer Kaushiki Chakraborty.
The world-renowned Sitar maestro Ustad Nishat Khan will be performing a rare duet with his equally talented brother and Surbahar maestro, Ustad Irshad Khan, and there's also a unique collaboration between sound artist Jason Singh and the celebrated jazz star Sarathy Korwar to look forward to.
On Friday night Walthamstow’s South Asian arts collective, Dialled In, hosts a club night takeover in the Queen Elizabeth Hall foyer as part of the series. Kicking off from 10:30pm and running late into the night, this high-energy event showcases a breadth of musical talent with NTS Radio regular and illustrator Anu, the genre-bending Mumbai artist Kiss Nuka, and the Vedic Roots sound system, a product of Southhall's historic incubation of Bhangra and dub, headlining the party.
