Together with dancers from Moving into Dance Mophatong (MIDM), a flagship South African contemporary dance company nourished by Zulu traditions, choreographer Robyn Orlin presents We wear our wheels with pride and slap your streets with color… We said ‘bonjour’ to satan in 1820.
The work is a homage to the Zulu rickshaw drivers of South Africa’s past and their brightly coloured rickshaws that used to ply Durban’s beachfront promenades during the height of the apartheid era. Through song, dance and costume the work pays tribute to the strength and dexterity of those men, and their extraordinary willpower to withstand humiliation and use their artistic self-expression as a weapon in the fight for dignity and equality.
Bringing together with explosive effect this encounter of music, dance and colour is the breathtaking singing of Anelisa Stuurman, also known as Annalyzer. In collaboration with the composer, Yogin Sullaphen, she has developed a style influenced by slam, Khoisan tradition and research into new forms of modern music.
