According to the Chinese zodiac, on Saturday 10 February we officially enter the Year of the Dragon. The Lunar New Year is always a colourful celebration in London, and here in South Bank many venues are also marking the occasion. Chinese New Year-themed events to look out for include:
The Intergenerational Game – Lunar New Year Edition
Riffing on the 1970s TV show Generation Game, cross-disciplinary arts collective Orang Collectif presents this fun interactive family celebration at Southbank Centre full of games, dance-offs, quiz rounds and mass participatory fun. Entrance is free and there are two editions at 10:30am and 1:30pm.
Year of the Dragon at Ping Pong
The colourful dim sum restaurant at Southbank Centre is serving a limited-edition Year of the Dragon menu from 6 February until 5 March. Dishes to look forward to on the extensive festive menu include crispy dragon balls and a tequila-based Dragon Punch.
Chinese New Year at BFI Southbank
The cinema in South Bank shows three films on 10 February that spotlight China and Hong Kong. Screening at the NFT3 there’s Stanley Kwan’s 1986 romance-murder mystery Love Unto Waste, the UK premiere of Ann Hui’s new documentary Elegies about poetry in Hong Kong, and Father, Dong Wei’s sensitive documentary portrait of a father and son.
