The National Theatre welcomes the return of the innovative musical London Road.
First staged at the National in 2011, this critically acclaimed verbatim work is based on the story of how the London Road community in Ipswich grappled with the discovery and subsequent trial of a serial murderer on their street.
In autumn 2006 the everyday life of the Suffolk town of Ipswich was shattered by the discovery of the bodies of five women. The occupant of No. 79 London Road was arrested, charged and finally convicted of the murders.
Using their own words set to an innovative musical score, London Road movingly looks at the events' impact on the street's residents. Caught amid the headlines and a media invasion of their quiet road, this production explores how the community grappled with the news, and paints a picture of how ordinary people come together in extraordinary times to find healing and build new futures.
Director Rufus Norris (Small Island), writer Alecky Blythe (Our Generation) and composer Adam Cork reunite for this highly anticipated return of the remarkable, award-winning verbatim musical that was showered with 5-star reviews when it was first staged in 2011.
