Florence Nightingale’s birthday, 12 May, is celebrated globally as International Nurses Day. To honour the occasion this year the Florence Nightingale Museum at the St Thomas' Hospital in South Bank is staying open into the evening on Friday 10 May for a special museum evening devoted to the story of the Flying Nightingales.

The new museum’s new exhibition explores the hidden stories of the Flying Nightingales. In 1944, 200 women were drafted as so-called ‘Flying Nightingales’. Their job was to fly across the Channel on RAF planes to deliver supplies to the front, and then to return with the thousands of wounded men who needed their care.

It is estimated that during the war the Flying Nightingales risked their lives to bring home some 100,000 wounded men. Despite their incredible bravery and extraordinary life-saving work, the women were only formally recognised for their contributions in 2008 when the remaining Flying Nightingales received lifetime achievement awards from the then Duchess of Cornwall.

As part of this International Nurses Weekend event there is a storytelling performance at 7pm and a bar will be open throughout the evening.
