The revered conductor leads the Philharmonia Orchestra in Mahler’s Ninth Symphony.
Now in his 90s, Herbert Blomstedt is one of the most respected and well-loved conductors of our time. For this special concert he directs the Philharmonia Orchestra in a performance of Mahler’s epic 90-minute long Ninth Symphony.
A work of overwhelming emotional impact, Mahler’s masterpiece spans doubt and defiance; grief and hope; climaxes of devastating power; and a hushed ending that can make an enthralled audience of thousands almost forget to breathe.
The evening opens with Blomstedt joined by legendary violinist Leonidas Kavakos in the fourth of Mozart’s five violin concertos.
This special concert at the Royal Festival Hall promises to be one of the most memorable highlights of Southbank Centre’s packed winter classical music season.
