This new multi-venue event at the Southbank Centre brings together more than 200 musicians from six orchestras for a unique evening celebrating the greatest hits of classical music. Concert goers will be enjoy a series of live, looping performances taking place in different spaces across the Southbank Centre as they explore the site through the evening.
All of Southbank Centre’s Resident Orchestras – Aurora Orchestra, Chineke! Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Sinfonietta, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, and the Philharmonia Orchestra – will be taking part, and the evening’s musical programme reflects historic, modern and contemporary favourites from diverse classical music genres.
The diverse repertoire spans 600 years of music, from Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony to the symphonic score of The Lord of the Rings, the finale of Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4, and Margaret Bonds’ powerful Montgomery Variations.
Following the site-wide performances, audiences will return to the Royal Festival Hall for a grand finale led by the Philharmonia Orchestra, conducted by Principal Guest Conductor Marin Alsop. As the largest ensemble of the evening, the 111-strong orchestra propels audiences into space with iconic selections from John Williams’ Star Wars Suite, and Holst’s The Planets.
Following the live orchestral performances, audiences can stick around to hear more contemporary-classical music favourites from a DJ set, while socialising at the bars of the Royal Festival Hall.
