South Bank 'Spine Route'
Lambeth Council are investing £8million in the area to celebrate and support the South Bank as an international destination, and to create safe public spaces that are welcoming to all. The next phase of these works is focussed on Concert Hall Approach, Sutton Walk and Belvedere Road, in front of the Royal Festival Hall.
Over the coming weeks, Lambeth Council will be holding a number of Focus Group sessions and are keen to hear the view of people who use the area regularly.
The South Bank Spine Route Masterplan, which covers the area between Jubilee Gardens near the London Eye and Bernie Spain Gardens near the Oxo Tower, aims to transform the public realm in the heart of London. Lambeth Council’s objectives include the creation of safer, greener and more inviting public spaces, as well as improving accessibility, permeability and the overall experience for pedestrians and cyclists.

As part of this masterplan, Lambeth Council has implemented several improvements along the route aimed at fostering a cycle and pedestrian-friendly environment and reducing traffic dominance. These improvements include creating better crossing points and reshaping the pavements near Jubilee Gardens and on Chicheley Street, traffic filters to restrict through traffic and promote cycling and walking in the area.
To help understand how the trial interventions are impacting the way people get around, they want to hear from all those who live, travel, work and have an interest in the area. Therefore, alongside other activities they are holding three focus groups (1.5hr long each) to gather feedback on these new features and to allow the public to suggest further improvements and ensure future changes meet the needs of the users of the space.
They are very keen to hear your views and to get diverse perspectives. Participants will receive a £30 voucher for food and drinks at Limin South Bank Restaurant or a ticket to the London Eye.
The focus groups will be held on the following dates.
Wednesday, 29th May between 5pm – 6pm (at WeWork – 10 York Road)
